Just a few notes:
> BTW What is the history of your SoftwareDistribution folder?
Don't know. Never noticed it before starting having problem after SP2.
However it was for sure already there before SP2 since there are subdir with
older dates.

My account has administator rights. If I run these "executables" (the files
named with an hex number but no extension) they actually install themselves
all right and I can see the success in the Installation History page of
Windwos Update. (note that I renamed them ".exe" before running them.

No. this is sc sdshow for Automatic Updates but I don't know how to read this.

Doesn't matter. I was reporting this only because both problems seems to be
related to account indentification/authorization. So they might have the same
cause/solution. Dan seem to have the same issue too.
