Problem with that damn Windows update

I'm using Microsoft XP Home Edition, NetVista platform. Anyhow, for the
last two days the damn Windows icon to the right of the task bar keeps
showing up and disappearing at random. The last time I browsed over it, it
said 37% downloading. My question is, how do I find out what it's
downloading and how do I stop it from occurring? I want the system to check
for updates and tell me when they are ready to install so *I* can choose
when to make up for Microsoft's pathetic crap, not when my *computer* or
*Microsoft* wants to.

I *think* it's trying to download the XP Pro 75 MB package or whatever it
is. I've already disabled the auto-update in the control panel by telling
it to inform me about updates and let me decide when to fix them. But I need
to know how to stop this damn XP system from trying to do it itself? It
lags the HELL out of my computer whenever it does that, and I want it
stopped ASAP.

I'm pretty sure that it's not that I actually NEED updates, because last
night I spent over three hours downloading what it told me I allegedly
needed from the windowsupdate website at Microsoft.
