Windows Update site problems

I am trying to download XP Service Pack 2 (after an unlucky system restore
which restored my pc back to when I bought it 18 months ago!)

When I connect to the MS updates site nothing happens. It says that it is
checking for updates and it might take a minute but nothing happens.

Could this be something to do with my internet connection? I say this
because I have been trying to send help requests to HP from their support
site and they fail to send indicating that I it can't find an internet
connection. This has only happened after my restore but I can access the
internet and my ISP confirms that everything seems OK with them.

Need help from a friendly GEEK
