Robert

Very interesting.

The contents of the file WININIT.INI (doesn't everone have this file which
updates itself [or creates itself if I delete it] when I start up) are : -

[RENAME]
NUL=C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES\INDEX.DAT
NUL=C:\WINDOWS\TEMPOR~1\INDEX.DAT
NUL=C:\WINDOWS\TEMPOR~1\CONTENT.IE5\INDEX.DAT

N.B. I do not have a file index.dat in the Windows/temporary internet files
directory but I have the other two and am aware of what they do and how they
work (sort of).

Why would this be a Trojan? What is it trying to achieve? I have AVG (up to
date) antivirus and zonealarm (latest free version) so didn't think I would
catch anything (am particularly careful).

Surely if I have the problem (windows update won't work / cannot access
secure sites/ system restore not working properly / cannot retreive my e-mail
through Windows Outlook) when I've got that file and there is no problem when
I rename it it must be connected.

Lots of people are getting the 0x800c0005 message so if this is not the
answer - what is?

Thanks.
