That could be a symptom that you have a Trojan.
wininit.ini is one tool that they use to load themselves
into your system.
Since WinME has some measure of protection to its system files
with its SFP facility it's possible that this is the method a Trojan
would need to use to ensure that it could perpetuate itself.
What files are to be copied by this wininit.ini that you keep renaming?
BTW there are more appropriate newsgroups to have this discussion in.
It doesn't appear to have anything to do with Windows Update apart
from the fact that WU delivered the package that exposed your problem.
