I am new to these discussions and I may be 'crazy' but here's my story (sorry
if it's a bit long but there's a connection here I'm sure).
I wanted to update IE6 to IE6 SP1 and started the update [I have Windows ME].
When I ran setup I was having problems installing.
The Microsoft Knowledge Base referenced an old CAB file that needed to be
removed (why oh why can't these things work first time) - so I removed the
file and the setup worked.
Since the upgrade I have been having trouble with my system restore not
working AND have not been able to connect to https (secure) sites (could not
do my online banking!!!!) AND got this 0x800C0005 error message for windows
updates AND (I feel) Microsoft Outlook (2000) my e-mail client has not been
working properly.
I think I have a fix for this problem (for me at least) as it would appear
that all these things now seem to work - I got this from a Knowledge Base
article about Windows ME system restore problems - but it seems to make
everything work .
There is a configuration file in the Windows directory called WININIT.INI
(this is updated and date and time stamped each time I restart my computer)
and if you rename it wininit.nin (or anything really) and click yes when
prompted - DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER but try everything again i.e.
connecting to https (secure) sites and try windows update - IT WORKS!!! (for
me at least). If this does not work just restart your computer.
I have to do this each time I restart my computer (what a nonsense but it
works).
I have e-mailed Microsoft with this to see if I can get a response [will let
you know]
Try it - let me know - hope it works - good luck!!!!
OOOOPs!! - I nearly forgot something.
Realised this after reading some of the other discussions.
I had previously installed Norton Internet Security Family Edition but had
never used it - have other Anti Virus and Firewall software.
I removed (uninstall and deleted any remaining files and folders) that this
week - doing a bit of 'housekeeping' whilst searching around for an answer to
this problem.
Might have something to do with it but still have to do the WININIT.INI thing
as well.
Probably worth mentioning that you must connect to the internet after the
WININIT.INI bit. If you are already connected and you do the renaming and try
again (windows update/call https pages/use Outlook 2000 e-mail) it doesn't
work.
Not sure how this works with Broadband - I'm only dial-up.
