I had the exact same problem. The problem I had was that I have two NIC cards
in my machine, for some reason by disabling the NIC card used for internal
communication windows update started working. Don't know if this helps.
I haven't diagnosed the problem, if I have time later I can have a look and
get back to this thread. I am running SP2 on a Professional. My guess is that
the new firewall in windows is doing something wrong (it has a few very
annoying bugs when it comes to two or more NIC cards)
Cheers,
Niclas
