Windows XP Pro, SP2 and v5 windows update software. Guess what - I too get
stuck at the searching for the latest version message when running windows
update.
When I tried the v4 windowsupdate link, it told me that I needed to be
logged on as administrator to do this. I WAS logged on as administrator!! I
even checked to make sure that administrator still had administrative
permissions (in case SP2 messed with that too, as a 'security measure'). I
even launched the (v5) update checker application in system32 with 'run as'
and set it to administrator and entered the password.
It sounds like there's some security/permissions screwup going on here,
between SP2 and. v5 of windows update.
