Hello Gavin,
Managed Desktop
The IT administrator has set the Automatic Updates policy such that
Automatic Updates client performs a scheduled installation every day at 3
AM if any critical update is available. When the update has been
successfully downloaded, Automatic Updates logs an event that an update is
ready to install on the scheduled day and time.
Then a pre-installation countdown dialog box is displayed to the first
found locally logged on administrator (if one exists), for a five-minute
duration. If an administrator is logged on to the system, he or she can
stop the installation from proceeding, and the installation is scheduled
for the next day at 3 AM. If no administrator is logged on, or if the
countdown is not stopped, the installation automatically proceeds. If there
are locally logged on users, they will be presented with a notification
that the machine is about to restart if the updates installed require a
restart to complete the installation.
Recommended Automatic Updates configuration:
" "AUOptions"="4"
" "ScheduledInstallDay"="0"
" "ScheduledInstallTime"="3"
Automatic Updates Client interaction
The customer has set Automatic Updates to perform scheduled installations
every Saturday at 3 A.M. On Thursday at 1 P.M., a critical update is ready
to install. Automatic Updates then adds an icon to the notification area
and displays a balloon explaining that updates are ready to install. The
customer clicks the balloon to see the available updates. The customer
reviews the updates and sees the ability to immediately perform the
installation. Because a scheduled day and time is set, the Remind me later
button is unavailable so that the reminder time is not confused with the
scheduled time. The customer decides to install the updates by clicking the
Install button. Automatic Updates immediately installs the updates.
Non-admin user
The IT administrator has set Automatic Updates to perform a scheduled
installation every day at 3 A.M. An update completed its download and is
ready to install during the day. The non-admin local user does not get an
Automatic Updates icon in the notification area stating that the
installation is ready. The user then turns the computer off for the night.
In the morning, Automatic Updates detects that the scheduled installation
time has passed and reschedules the installation for the next day at 3 A.M.
This time, the computer is still on at 3 A.M and a local user is using the
computer. Because this user is not a member of the local administrators
group, there is no notification to the user that the installation is about
to occur. If the update requires the system to be restarted the
non-administrative user will be notified and allowed five minutes to save
their work and log off before the automated computer restart.
Yes -- user does not have to be an admin, if you use the recommended
settings.
If you schedule the download when the users are not working, this will have
no effect on performance or the user.

Hi.
Im thinking of setting all the computers on my domain to download and
install updates automatically.
Will this this work if the user on the computer is not an administrator or
if no one is logged on? Also, how noticeable will it be to the user, ie
will the system slow down?
TIA
