I agree... With 95 and NT I used to wait till the update had been out for a
while to see the feedback and wait for fix packs if the update had problems.
The recent rash of exploits and new attacks led me to believe that waiting
before updating was a higher risk, however anyone using a decent virus
scanner with auto updated DAT files is probably ahead of the curve in
protecting their machine. SpyWareBlaster and SpyBot close most of the
nuisance holes and the spam filters from corporate or reliable ISP's strip
the well known garbage pretty effectively.
I usually rebuild a machine a few times before I get it the way I want it so
the loss of this laptop is no big deal. Had I turned on autoupdate and all my
machines had gotten hit I would probably be more interested in finding a way
to recover. As for those who mentioned backup and recovery methods, I'm very
familiar with these as are all of the IT staff. The necessity of using these
following a simple update for commercial software is my objection. Sure... it
takes 30-60 minutes to clean up, times 30 employee's at this site, times 40
or 50 sites, times the salary and lost time from our real business. The cost
of cleanup is not insignificant.
