I've tried this in the Windows Update community and,
although I've had helpful suggestions, haven't gotten a
solution.
I'm having a problem with permissions for three HKCR keys
on my daughter's XP Home (important because it doesn't
have secedit) machine that are preventing SP2 from
installing. The importance of its being my daughter's
machine is that there's all kinds of music software (like
Kazaa) installed that I know nothing about.
I have tried what is said in KB 873148 (that's how I know
the three keys). I have virus scanned, AdAwared (both with
current definitions), checkdisked, defragged, used
msconfig to disable startup items (except my network
drivers, which I need to get to Windows Update) and all
non-Microsoft services. For some reason I have to turn on
BITS manually to use Windows Update when I do a clean boot
like this (apparently you can't use Windows Update in safe
mode, I tried). The account I use has administrative
rights. I have now tried this about six times using
Windows Update, and consistently get the same error that
SP2 did not install fully (although some updating was
done) because access is denied. Given how much we're on-
line, I really want to install this thing to keep getting
security updates. As an aside, I'd like to congratulate
Microsoft for having a good unistall program (second, and
last, aside, XP Pro is worth the extra $100).
The setupapi.log file shows access denied errors when
trying to delete three HKCR keys -- .AudioCD, .DVD
and .vnd.ms.Radio. When I looked at these keys using
regedit, they were odd in several respects. First, except
for DVD, they showed the user/administrator account we log
onto (I'll call it DAUGHTER) as well as the typical
ADMINISTRATORS, OWNER/CREATOR, SYSTEM and USERS. Both
DAUGHTER and ADMINISTRATORS had read and special rights -
not full, and they were not inherited (the other keys I
looked at have the administrator's rights inherited -
from what I don't know, permissions for HKCR only lists
EVERYONE, which does not include full rights). For all
three keys, I checked both full and read, went to advanced
and made the rights apply to the key and subkeys, and then
checked to see that ADMINISTRATORS and DAUGHTER had full
and read rights in each subkey. An interesting quirk - not
on my other keys - is that on the advanced screen there
are two separate lines for administrator, one with full,
one with read.
I have tried three times since doing this and it fails in
the same old way each time - keeps saying it can't delete
those keys because access is denied. The sections of the
setupapi.log file are the same.
One more idiocy: when I tried to use Windows Update from
the built-in ADMINISTRATOR account, it just hung on the
screen checking whether I had the latest version of
Windows Update.Tried to set up a new, semi-clean
administrative account, also hung on that screen. (I had
BITS, cryptographic and RPC services running.)
I've put a snippet of one error sequence from the log at
the end of this post. There are six of these sequences in
the file, two sets of three errors separated by lots of
writing inf files. After the sixth, the program gives up
and starts the uninstall process.
The way I figure it there's one of the following going on:
(1) I don't know what I'm doing fiddling with the
permissions (can I just copy secedit from one of our XP
Pro machines?) or (2) something not shown in msconfig (or
Task Manager) is grabbing onto these keys and not letting
go. Given that they all look like music-related keys, I
suspect the second. Of course, the first is also true.
Any help (other than reinstalling or reformatting, I'm not
that eager, though I am fully backed-up) is greatly
appreciated.
Log snippet (including lines before and after) follows
(don't understand the thing about spuninst either - that's
in all six of these and it's only after the sixth that it
unistalls):
