Hello.

You will find all the answers to this and a few other problems in
"http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2chngs.mspx" Go to Part 6
In short log on as administrator
click start
click run
enter regedit
click ok
Navigate to the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Polices\microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
there is a key AUOptions. This should be set to 3= notify before install/
or 4= scheduled install or 5 Automatic updates is required but end users can
change time

The best practice is to change the key to 3 (apply the change/ save the
change)then open Control Panel Category View. Click on the new Shield
"Security Centre" and then click on the option at foot "Automatic Updates".
The fields should no longer be greyed out.

Note: if you have the Security Centre open and then change the registry it
will not see the change. You will need to close the window, go back to the
Control panel and re-open the Security Centre.

Once you have saved your options or made your changes. restart the machine
to check that they have saved correctly. Control panel, Security Shield,
Automatic Updates.

Tip: most of these settings are accessible via the GPedit.msc accessible
from the Run box. They are Group or Local Policy Settings. So if you are
running XP PRO you should be able to access these.
Hope this helps.
Regards
