This was solved for me by following Lucy's suggestion in the response to
Larry's query dated 5/9/2004. Her first suggestion worked. I started
automatic update and I set BITS to manual ( the opposite of the Microsoft
message, which says to set it to automatic). I don't know which step of the
two did it, but update now works.
