allenh, I am having the same problem and I suspect that it is because I am
using an old version of XP Pro which came without service packs but I have
since loaded them from the internet update site. When doing a fix install it
asked me to put in the disk with the service pack which I did not have and it
got upset and seemed to terminate the installation. However everything booted
up fine but when I try to update on the internet I get the above error
message.

However following your instructions I get down to
"HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Svchost"
Inside the SVCHOST folder I double-clicked and opened the "netsvcs" key.
You said that Under "Value Data" I would see numerous services.

I would not recognise a "service" even if it jumped up and bit me. I saw no
reference to "value data". I checked these files with my other computer which
also runs on XP Pro and found nothing that would enlightenen me there.

However the good computer did have a REG_DWORD called
AuthenticationCapabilities which was not there on my first computer on which
I was re-installing XP.

Can you help me?
