Resolution of 0x80072EE2 error in Update ver 5

I fixed this problem, and thought news of the fix might benefit others.

Yesterday I logged into Windows Update, was prompted to download a new
version, did so, and discovered that Windows Update no longer works. Error
code: 0x80072EE2 .

It turned out that the new version of Update wants messenger services
(svchost) enabled. I enabled Messenger services (Control Panel --> Services
--> Messenger) long enough to access Windows Update; problem solved.

As I recall, I didn't have the option yesterday to refuse the update to V5.
I could download V5, or not run Windows Update anymore; those were the
choices. I think Microsoft might save users like me much grief by either,
(a), making the download optional, or (b) warning users of anything that the
new version of mandatory software might not like.

Microsoft is doing this with SP2, I gather. The computer press has carried
articles about applications that don't work with SP2. Users needn't install
SP2 at all. But in this case, I was given no choice but to download V5. If
I hadn't figured out the fix, the download would have cost me the use of this
tool.
