DSL Modem TCP Conflict

Hi, just connected with DSL on my laptop, yet my norton firewall and virus
protection cannot update (can't find any settings that would have to be
changed because of going DSL!?). also got System mechanic/windows updater
etc. and they update fine.
also use a file sharer and remote computers can no longer connect. getting
messages about TCP's and proxy servers and really don't have much of an idea!
