Simply disabling Norton and rebooting allowed me to install the windows updates. I still have the problem with the adware that I can't uninstall. When I use Spybot or Adaware or Spyware Blaster, I can find and kill it, but when I open a new browser, it re-installs. I think I'm prtected from anything new now. I just need to kill what I have.
