I am having a problem with a win98SE machine and Internet Explorer
while trying to use windows update. I do not know when the problem
actually began, but it could not have been that long ago. I have run
ad-aware and Spybot S&D as well as my virus scanner and do not
believe the problem is caused by a virus or spy ware.
If I do a Help-about, the information under version comes up blank, as
does the product ID. It shows SP!, Q837009, Q832894, and Q313829 as
updates.
Every time I try running Windows update, I get the following error:
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff7c854.
Registers:
EAX=00000012 CS=017f EIP=bff7c854 EFLGS=00010246
EBX=00000017 SS=0187 ESP=00648808 EBP=00648828
ECX=00000012 DS=0187 ESI=aac85282 FS=0fd7
EDX=00000000 ES=0187 EDI=006490b4 GS=0000
This error occurs after the left pane is presented and the security
notice is displayed. It never gets to the scanning section.
I have tried to run ie6setup and it gives me the same error as windows
update with the exception of ie6wzrd is the cause of the error? I have
run Internet Explorer repair and it will not complete either. Nor is
the option to remove the program available.
Does this seem to be a problem with Windows updates or something else
(scripting? Active X?)
Any other advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
