Please post a link when you refer to other posts.
Searching is not always successful, especially when the poster
is (mostly) anonymous.

Notice that it is very easy to include a link using the newer version
of the web interface. Here is a portal which you can use to access
your Win98 newsgroups. E.g. Click on the Windows 98 menu item
near the bottom of the list on the right.

That could be a sign that something interfered with the update.
Did you disable all third-party security programs such as an anti-virus
scanner before the install phase?

Perhaps that's a pretty good clue that the update didn't complete? ;)

How? I think you would need to have something to uninstall first.

Look for more clues about what actually happened during the update.
E.g. I don't have your OS so I don't know what you should have but
FWIW on XP I can find references to 832894 in setupapi.log
Then I can use the date implied by that to search for other files modified
on that day. E.g. browse setupapi.log and do a find up from the bottom
for 832894; then scroll up to find the date and timestamp associated
with that entry; then use File Find to find *all* files modified within that
day; turn on Detailed view, sort by Date Modified and scroll to all the files
which were changed around the same time as that log entry was made.
Note: unfortunately this will not find all changes; in particular it won't find
the modules which were copied and replaced. The closer you are
to the actual time of the update the more accurate the list of changes
may be.

Good luck
