RE: SP1 XP (express) will download but not install

Paul,

Try the following steps to install SP1a in your coomputer. Based on the current information, I'd like to provide you with some suggestions below:

Suggestion 1: Download SP1a from the following link and install it from local harddisk.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/4/f/54f8bcf8-bb4d-4613-8ee7-db69d01735ed/xpsp1a_en_x86.exe

If Windows XP SP1 still cannot be installed. Please try the suggestion 2.

Suggestion 2: install Windows XP SP1a in Safe Mode

Log onto the computer in Safe Mode

1. Restart the computer.

2. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.

3. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.

4. Run the computer in Safe Mode and try to install Windows XP SP1a from local

harddisk.

Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary.

If this issue persists, try the suggestion 3:

Suggestion 3: Delete CatRoot2 folder in Safe Mode and check Cryptographic Services

1. Log onto the computer in Safe Mode

a. Restart the computer.

b. Keep pressing the F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.

c. Choose Safe Mode, and press Enter.

d. Run the computer in Safe Mode.

Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary.

2. Delete the CatRoot2 folder.

a. Locate the directory ?C:\Windows\System32?.

b. Delete the C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot2 folder.

c. Restart the computer and enter Normal Mode.

d. Try again to install these updates.

If this issue persists, please follow these steps bellow to check Cryptographic Services runs properly.

1. Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.

2. Double click Services.

3. Right click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.

4. Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.

5. Restart the computer and install the windows XP SP1a again.

If this issue persists, please try the suggestion 4:

Suggestion 4: Set permissions in registry.

1. Click Start, click Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and click OK

2. Locate and right click:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

3. Click Permissions

4. Click Advanced.

5. High-light Administrators, click Edit, and check Allow behind Full Control, and click OK.

6. High-light SYSTEM, click Edit, and check Allow behind Full Control, and click OK.

7. Click Apply, click OK to quit Advanced Security Settings for Auto Update.

8. Click OK to quit Permissions for Auto Update. Quit Registry Editor and restart your computer.

9. Try to install Windows XP SP1a again.
