I am having the same problem in Windows XP Professional,
SP1, and yes, I have checked the troubleshooter. All the
topics there about failing to install patches seem to
involve getting various error messages. I'm not -
Windows Update reports all the patches successfully
applied (multiple times), there are no errors reported
in the Windows Update log file (I've checked),
yet the patches are still listed
as needed after I reboot and rerun Windows Update.
I'm doing this over a dialup connection, so it is
a royal PITA that has burned up more of my time over
the last couple of days than I care to count.
The 10 security/critical patches involved are: KB837001,
KB828741, KB828035, KB825119, KB828026, KB826939,
KB824105, KB823182, KB824141, and 819696. I was able
to work around the non-install of KB826939 by clicking
on the "More Info" link and downloading and applying
the patch outside of Windows Update by going to
the appropriate download link from the Knowledge Base
article. Interestingly, this patch was around 9 Meg, but
WU had listed it as 282K. When I next came into WU,
this patch was no longer listed as needed, so it
looks like this workaround worked. I suspect the same
approach would also work for the others, but it is a slow
and painful way to go (especially over dialup...), since
you have to do the patches one at a time instead of
batching them up to run overnight.
Background info of unknown relevance: this is a brand
new XP Pro SP1 system that got hit by Sasser the very
first time I went online to activate XP and download
fixes. I had to install the Sasser patch (KB835732 I
think) outside of WU, and used stinger.exe from McAfee
to clean up the damage. I now have the XP personal
firewall activated. I'm using AT&T dialup, and had
downloaded their accelerator in an effort to speed
up the patch downloads, but I've deactivated the
accelerator while trying to troubleshoot this problem.
I've cleaned out the Internet Explorer cache and
re-downloaded all the patches (after a reboot) in
case the problem was corrupt patch downloads - but
this didn't make a difference. I've got Mozilla 1.0
installed as my primary browser, but all the WU stuff
I do is from Internet Explorer. I don't know if any
of this paragraph is relevant to the problem, but I'm
throwing it out there in case it rings any bells with
anyone else.
Any brilliant insights into how to correct this problem
gratefully appreciated. Any info on why the full
downloads seem to be so much bigger than the WU sizes
also appreciated.
