Walt;
"I constantly backup my data because the machine's operating system
has failed to earn my trust."
Is that the only reason you back up?
If so, you are in for a shock whenever you may find an OS that meets
your expectations.
A OS is only one of many potential causes of data loss and often the
least damaging to data.

You may not trust your life to your computer, but you most likely
already put your life in the hands of computers, some using various
forms of Windows.

the freeway when you needed it? Or if your new refer shut down
monthly? Or the toilet in your new home backed up once every other
week? You'd expect the manufacturer/builder to fix it. And if there
was no written warrantee, the law provides for "a reasonable
expectation of serviceability." Only with software and computers do
we resign ourselves to periodic failures, and, because of the
monopoly, don't walk with our feet -- to the better competitor. We
are like dumb little lemmings. That there is no "better" competitor
is a sorry sign. It is, unfortunately, fully expected in a
monopolistic situation that the monopoly would fail to respond to the
needs of its customers. I yearn for a computer that will always work
when I need it, as dependably as my car. And a support system equally
as effective. I trust my car with my life. Would I do the same with
my computer? I constantly backup my data because the machine's
operating system has failed to earn my trust.
