To fix this problem,
Exit the messenger if it running or close it with the
Task Manager (Press Alt+Ctl+Delete to activate the Task
Manager in windows NT/2000/XP).
Then go to the directory of "C:\Program Files\Messenger"
and change the file "msmsgs.exe" to any other name
(example: "msmsgs_old.exe").
The messenger will never be loaded ...

>After installing the latest round of updates msmsgs.exe
appears to load by itself. I'm a gamer and normally shut
down unneeded tsr's to improve performance. I disable
Norton Antivirus first then go down a "hit list". After
the updates to XP Home, Windows Messenger's executable,
msmsgs.exe, loads without the program being started. I've
tried resetting the priority to "low", no effect. No
other programs that I'm aware of are accessing Messenger.
Why is it loading? It's causing crashes when I play
Neverwinter Nights, which utilizes most of my system
resources. I also recently downloaded and installed (and
used) Spybot-S&D, could that be calling it? Other changes
involved removing several spyware programs
including "BargainBuddy", and updating the
driver/software for my Soundblaster Live! card from HP.
Also Norton found and removed Trojan.StartPage but Spybot
didn't find any related registry changes. It noted a
registry change on MediaPlayer but I ignored that change.
Suggestions? OTHER than giving up gaming? Has anyone else
noted this behavior on msmsgs.exe?
