Sometimes that advice is not enough. Many of the current worms disable
any antivirus software they find, so you're lulled into a false sense of
confidence.

The best strategy is to download a standalone disinfector like McAfee's
Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger), disconnect from the internet,
log in as a user with admin rights and then run stinger.exe to scan for
and clean out the common viruses. After a reboot go to your AV vendor's
site and get the very latest updates and then do a full scan.

Some viruses leave PCs in such a state that the only safe action is a
complete rebuild after a box has been infected.

Cheers,

Phil
