Many thanks. I will try all of this tomorrow when the family are out and I have some peace/ quiet. I do not have any pop up / cookie/ ad blockers or (so called) internet accelerators or download manager. I do have Spybot and Adwatch but they are retrospective ie when used they tell you what has downloaded itself onto the machine. Neither program has any filters set to reject specific programs or program types.
I have tried swityching off the McAfee firewall and that made no difference. There is of course a firewall in the Wireless Router - but 2 other computers go via that router and neither of them has this "update" problem.
Is there any simple way that I can CHECK whether "something" is hindering download of the Activex controls eg something that I can download with safety (say to my USB2 solid state disk) and which will tell me that the download was a success?
