if you have any internet security programs running, such as Norton Internet Security, this could be part of the problem.
When I would go to Windows Update, it would go to the site all right, but when I would tell it to scan, I would get an error stating that Update encountered an error.
I had recently installed a computer maintenance program from Vcom called fix-it. I believe that's when problems, such as with Update started.
I found that certain services weren't starting and most seemed to be related to Norton Internet Security. After uninstalling the application, I was able to run Update again.
