No automatic update

I use two systems at home. One is a desktop/laptop network, using Win XP
Pro. I have "System>automatic updates>Keep my computer up to date>notify me
before downloading any updates" selected on both computers- but they NEVER
automatically update- I have to regularly do a manual check.
The old Windows 98 computer in the kid's room also has System>automatic
update>etc checked- it dials out to the same ISP- and ALWAYS pops up a
warning box when there are updates available.
What do you reckon might be happening here?
