Hello,
I'm wondering if this is due to a leftover from critical update notification, or, whether this is from "your" invoking Windows Update.
First, locate the folder \WUTemp and delete its contents.
The Critical Update notifier (Win98) (Automtic Updates for other versions of Windows) is known as being very "territorial".
The theory here is that both C.U.N. & Windows Update manual process got wind of this update, & now CUN insists you still have this item to do.
Use MSCONFIG to temporarily un-check C U N & reboot Windows.
In Regedit (very carefully )
Delete the sub-key "SelfupdateStatus" *IF* it is present in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\IUControl
key.
Exit out of Regedit.
Just to clean up some temp files, do the steps in this article. I am not suggesting you had a fail; but only for cleanup.
Be sure you do not remove IUHIST.XML .

Recheck your setting for Automtic Updates. Be sure to have it notify you both before & after getting items
