As you've noted, there are security issues in some (many!) versions of HTML
renderers - the big component of web browsers such as Internet Explorer. To
save time and confusion, when these bugs are fixed in the Internet Explorer
rendering components, Microsoft just labels them as "Internet Explorer", and
doesn't mention that many other components - email, apparently your
newsreader, help files, etc - all use the Internet Explorer HTML renderer to
display HTML components.

So, yes, if there's an Internet Explorer flaw that's fixed, it's generally
worth applying that fix, if there's no problem with it and your software,
because IE is tied into so many other operations on your system.
