I'm starting a new thread here, because now I have my Windows 98
update working. The new issue though is the way Windows Update keeps
insisting that I need to download this:
------------------------
Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB819696)
Download size: 790 KB, < 1 minute
An identified security issue in Microsoft DirectX could allow an
attacker to run programs on a computer running Microsoft Windows. The
attacker would first have to send you an e-mail message or entice you
into visiting a malicious Web site. You can help protect your computer
by installing this update from Microsoft. Once you have installed this
item, it cannot be removed.

MowGreen (thanks a lot so far btw) suggested I try
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/819696.htm
The first part of that page says:
" " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " "
This issue may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
* The DWORD value for the following Registry key is less than
4.09.00.0900:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX
* You have an earlier version of Quartz.dll
" " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " "
Okay, I ran regedit, and the registry key I show is 4.08.01.0881 -
obviously lower than 4.09...
As for Quartz.dll - earlier than *WHAT*? Mine is dated 5/30/03, 9:00
AM.
The page then goes on to say
" " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " "
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, reinstall DirectX 9.0b on your computer. To do
so, visit the Microsoft Download Center.
The following file is available for download from the Microsoft
Download Center:
Download the dxwebsetup.exe package now.

To put it mildly, reinstalling DirectX 9.anything scares the kee-rap
out of me. Two months ago, I installed a kids' game on the computer
and it put 9.0 on (over the 8.1 that I had before). The game kept
locking up. I did some digging and updated the Intel video/display
driver to the newest one. That worked okay for a day, but then I
started having the display go black on me on bootup once Windows
launched. I wound up doing a DOS boot and a scanreg /restore to put
myself back to where I'd been pre-9.0.
Some research on the Intel site revealed that (by my read), they don't
make a driver that supports DirectX 9.anything for Windows 98. See
the very bottom of this post (below the row of X's) for a detailed
message on this that I sent to Intel and Dell technical support, but
never got a response back on.
So I'm faced with a nasty quandary.
I can keep my DirectX 8.1 for now. It's not the latest, and Windows
Update will always bug me that I need KB819696. But at least I'll
have a usable display!
Or I can roll the dice and install DirectX 9.0b. That IS the latest,
and will supposedly stop Windows Update from pestering me about
KB819696. But based on my firsthand previous experience, I'm afraid
I'll lose my video display again. That's (kinda) supported by the
information I detail below the X's below.
What should I do? I'd really welcome a knowledgeable person saying
"Go ahead and install DirectX 9.0b and you'll have no problems this
time because [substantive reasons here]".
More guidance, please!

A January technical support request I'd sent to Intel and Dell, on
which I never received a response I could work with:
My Dell computer has the Intel 810e graphics chip set in it and I am
contemplating installing DirectX 9.0 to replace my existing DirectX
8.1.
Some online research indicated that there might be compatibility
problems with my chipset and/or drivers.
The latest driver for my chipset in a Windows 98 environment is
something called win9xe67.exe. According to its release notes (see
ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/4666/ENG/readme_9x.txt), this
is driver revision 4.13.01.3196. According to Intel's "driver matrix"
(see http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/drivermatrix.htm#810/815),
the 4.13 indicates Windows 98/98SE/Me or Windows NT 4.0 support (4)
for DirectX version 8.x and below (.13). Only revision numbers X.14
support DirectX 9.x.
>From further browsing those Intel pages, it looks like even Windows
2000 and ME and XP don't have drivers offering DirectX 9.x support.
Their driver revisions are 6.13.
Is my interpretation correct in that there are currently no Intel
drivers for 810e that will support DirectX 9.0?
And if true, are there other sources of drivers for this chip known to
support DirectX 9.0 and how would I find them? I imagine that the
amount of software calling for DirectX 9.0 is only going to increase
with the passage of time.
