Many thanks for the advice.

I verified Windows XP SP1 is installed. It is.

"In progress" is listed in the Windows Update history,
but my query was that I was unable to install SP1 on my
computer, as my internet connection is unreliable, until
the final attempt. After which I restarted my computer
as adviced and this installation shows as "Successfull"
in the Windows Update history, unlike the other attempt
which still shows "In progress" even though the attempt
was in November. I was concerned that my computer thinks
it is trying to do something and therefore slowing down
my computer, which appears to have happened since I
installed.
