HELP - Update installation repeatedly fails (despite update showing success)

Hello everyone,
   I have a new Toshiba laptop with Win XP Home SP1 installed. I tried
to connect to internet to download the latest updates and this was
deemed successful by Windows update.

 Unfortunately I did not turn the Internet Firewall on (assumed that
Win XP does that by default) and my system was infected with Nachi,
Blaster-E and Agobot viruses. I used Sophos to get rid of the infected
files.

Now, however, every time I visit the update website, it still says
that I do not have all updates installed (including critical updates
KB828028, KB828035, KB825119, KB828026, KB826939, KB824105, KB823182,
KB824141, KB824146).

Again and again, I downloaded the patches (no problems in download)
but so far have NOT been able to install them.

In my final attempt, Windows update said that I installed all but two
of the critical updates.

I tried MSBA to identify the patches and download them individually.
Again, I can download the individual patches but simply cannot install
them. The installation window just closes on its own..

   I have similar problems in using msconfig, regedit, Norton AV (self
close on opening)..just wondering if they are related.

I currently have system restore turned off, firewall turned on and had
Sophos AV off when I tried the updates.
