Try this:
Go here
Get the file codesigning86.exe. This is a storage exe so just open it with WinZIP. Please extract the file to C:\Hold where you have made this folder Hold off your C drive.
Now in C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4 you will find a file called iuident.cab. Please copy this file to the above folder that contains chktrust.exe (you will see this in one of the folders made when you extract the file you have downloaded from Microsoft).
Put iuident.cab in the folder where chktrust.exe resides.
Now go to Start | Run | cmd | OK cd\ or if Windows 95,8,ME (Start | Run | command | OK | cd\ ). This opens a command console window. Hit cd\ This will put you at the C drive. Then cd hold puts you in C:\Hold. Then you can do the rest that gets you into the folder where chktrust.exe and iuident.cab are now sitting.
Then type chktrust iuident.cab and hit <ENTER>. When the certification query comes up say "Yes" OK. Then try the Windows Update Site now.
Let me know the result or if you didn't understand some of the directions.
