Jon,
That browse box is indeed in Word and Windows Explorer, and some of its
items are what I want to kill. I added it to HKLM because I want it applied
to the TS overall, except for Domain Admins, who don't get the GPO applied.
It works to remove the Network item from the common browse box dropdown.
Would it be possible to apply your fix for the user's icon on the desktop to
also make it disappear from the browse box dropdown list?
I assume I could place the same value for the user's icon in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum\
key, but I want to check with you first.

No problem - glad to help...
Ref Microsoft Word - I believe the browse box you are refering to is a
common browse box, not specific to Microsoft Word. If for example you
open My Computer on a Vista machine, you have the same arrow which
displays the same options - unless i'm looking at the wrong one?
With this in mind, try setting this value -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum\{F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C}
= 1 (REG_DWORD)
or
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum\{F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C}
= 1 (REG_DWORD)
Given you want to do this via a policy the later of the keys is probably
the one to use as it's HKCU...
Just rememeber, this is a Windows Explorer setting, not just an office
setting - it will affect any application which uses the common browser...
Let me know how you get on.
Regards,
Jon

Jon,
You brilliant man, you! That was precisely the fix for which I was
searching.
Now, I don't suppose you know how to hide, within Word 2007 and probably
Excel, the "Network" choice when one has the File > Open dialog box open,
that is visible if one clicks on the down arrow at the front of the
address bar.
Thank you!

Ah ok - I know which one now...
OK so the display of this is controlled by 2 possible values
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu\{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel\{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}
They are REG_DWORD values and if set to 1 will prevent the icon from
appearing.
Now if you want to control these via group policy, then you can create
yourself an ADM file with these keys in them (or modify an existing one)
and then you can set them within Group Policy.
Hopefully that helps.
Cheers,
Jon

Jon,
Thank you for the reply, but it is not the My Documents icon that is
the problem. There is an icon that has the user's name as its name, and
it looks sort of like a slightly-open book standing up.
I did a few Google searches and it appears that it is not something
that can be hidden, at least not in a standard GPO. If I could find its
registry entry, I'd make a custom GPO to kill it.

Hi Gregg,
To remove the My Documents icon from the desktop check Group Policy :
Configuration \ AdministrativeTemplates \ Desktop - there should be an
option to remove the My Documents icon from the desktop - that's what
you want to get rid of right?
In terms of the Symantec product - if it's controlled by the service
you'll have to stop that otherwise you need to find where it's being
run from at logon (Start Menu \ Programs \ Startup) or registry...
Download and have a look at AutoRuns -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx it will
tell you (and allow you to remove) everything that is set to autorun
at boot / logon.
Hope this helps,
Jon

Hello!
I am helping a buddy lock down a 2008 terminal server. I am using a
modified GPO on an SBS 2008 server that applies to an OU containing a
2008 terminal server. It worked perfectly for Windows 2000/2003
terminal server to lock down the desktop. For the life of me, I
cannot figure out how to get rid of the link on the desktop that
links to the user's files.
I found this article, but I was hoping for a GPO setting:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/fr-FR/winserverGP/thread/7fe3c75d-6c09-4b78-93cb-f36a1170b91f
OK, make that two last things. I don't use Symantec Endpoint
Protection so I'll ask here and ask my friend to check with Symantec.
How does one go about stopping SEP from running and adding menu items
every time a user logs into their TS session? If I delete the Start
Menu item, it gets recreated on the next login. I do NOT want users
to see that menu item.
Thank you for your input!

Apostrophes: when in doubt, leave them out! You will be correct more
often than not.
Its = Belonging to it. For example, "Look at the sky. Its color is
blue."
It's = It is. For example, "It's hot today."
It's = It has. For example, "It's been nice talking to you."
Its' = completely incorrect usage. Stop it!
