The box actually is set up to be a term serv. I have 10 CALS on it from when
we used to have more employees. One plan i'm scheming is to simply remove
the term services setup and downgrade it to a regular box and then remote in
as you suggest. However I had another idea. I have some spare boxes lying
around. I'm going to add one of them to the network and then my person can
still come in to the term serv then hop over to the box. I'll load O2007 to
that box and viola. problem solved. Thanks MS for being such a pain in my
***! :)
Thanks for sticking with me on this one. I think i have a work around that
will get it done - at least until I have a second person who needs to remote
int...
Thx

Sure there is. See it here:

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle. Thanks. I can 't keep track of anything
anymore.
I've done more looking - the issue is that you need a volume license key to
install it. To get into the Open License program you need to purchase a
minumum of five licenses. That's just to get in. Then you can buy things one
at a time if you want.
And the five licenses don't have to be all for MS Office. You could buy four
Windows CALs and one Office 2007 <whatever version>.
I don't know who you're speaking with but I think there's some confusion.
This is MS directly? Ask to speak to a supervisor.
I called again and again they state the only way to get Office 2007
to work on ANY server is via volume licensing for the product MS
Office Professional Plus 2007.
I have plain old Office 2007 Professional installed on W2003 and it works
fine. It's not a TS box, though. Then again, neither is yours. :-)
I thought of at least 1 primative
work around. I'll have my person connect to the term server and from
there term over to my workstation, logon to it and use the 2007
version on my box. Depending on how that goes, I may still change my
term server over to a regular server
You don't actually have Terminal Services unless you have TS licensing
installed. All you have is Remote Desktop on a W2003 server.
and just use the remote desktop
connection to it to see if that works. The MS lady told me no, it
won't, but I don't believe her.
Why don't you just let the user RDP directly to the XP workstation? Then
this problem goes away entirely.

It kind of went in reverse. I said "I'm running win2003 server on
an x64. they said you have to use MS Office professional plus."
There's no such thiong as "plus" so I don't know what they mean.
I tried
to make sense of things at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/HA101668651033.aspx, but
can't do it. Actually I think I'll call MS again today to find out
if the whole issue is the x64 OS. I'll never make that mistake
again. That has been a huge pain in the ***. Lots of things don't
work for an x64 OS.
This is true.
thx

Thanks. Your descriptions is exactly the way it USED to be. Much
nicer that. Apparently that all chanced with Office 2007. It
flat doesn't work that way now. I tried it with standard edition
and it failed. I called MS and they confirmed that I'm screwed.
What exactly did they tell you the system requirements *are* ?
Oops.
Sorry. Tough luck. So I still have the question of will Standard
edition even load onto this box and if so can I get 1 remote
session out of it. I have that posted to the Office forum in
hopes they can answer that one.
thx this stinks

I'm running Windows 2003 on a x64 machine. I haven't been using
the term server, but now I have it on again to allow 1 person to
remote in. I need to upgrade the Office 2003 to 2007. I
understand that to do so on a term server I have to purchase MS
Office Professional Plus via bulk licensing at a minimum of 5
licenses for about $500 each. This is not cost effective for 1
person to dial in for 5 hours/week! Someone told me that the box
supports 2 remote sessions that are not through terminal
services.
QUESTION: Is there a way I can set the box up, even if I change
it over to just a regular server, not a term server, so that I
can get 2 remote connections to it - such that I could just load
regular Office 2007 and it would work?
thanks,
Russ
You can use Remote Desktop (formerly known as "Terminal Services
Administration Mode"), which provides for two simultaneous logins
(plus the console session) - but not to host applications or
provide end user access. For that you need terminal services, TS
licenses, and sufficient licenses for MS Office or whatever apps
you use. I don't know why you'd need Office Professional (nor
what "plus" means) - nor do you need open license versions. You
just can't use OEM versions as far as I'm aware. If you had two
TS licenses you could go to Staples and buy two box/retail
copies of Office 2007 Small Business, as far as I'm aware.
All of this being said, if this server has any other roles on
your network, don't use it for TS. TS should be on its own
dedicated server. You could set up RD access to an XP Pro
desktop on your network if you just need one person to connect
in remotely.
