Re: TS 2008 Admin Connections

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Vera, thanks for your help.

Here's what I found via more trial and error (your references were good, but didn't seem to address the user account significance of the logon attempt - see below).

This is *without* the TS role installed in Server 2008.

I can logon to TWO TOTAL sessions via Remote Desktop IF each session uses DIFFERENT USER ACCOUNTS!

This is a very significant change from Server 2003. In 2003, there could be three TOTAL sessions (one local keyboard, two remote) and they could ALL USE THE SAME USER ACCOUNT! (i.e. Administrator). Not so in 2008.

In 2008, if you attempt to use the same user account for the second logon, it will let you log in but will automatically logoff the original remote connection without any prompting on either side (local or remote). It's automatic. Although, after the remote session logs off, the original session can resume where it left off.

In 2008, if you attempt a THIRD connection, you will be prompted as to which existing remote session you would like to DISCONNECT before proceeding!

Bottom line...

....in 2003 you could have THREE sessions going at one time and they could even use the exact same user account, if desired - or not.

....in 2008 you are limited to TWO total connections (local and/or remote) and they HAVE to be using different user accounts.

Note: At first I thought I was limited to only one session because I was using the same user account (Administrator) and was watching my original connected (local or remote) be automatically logged off when the new session connected.

On a 2008 server *without* the TS role installed, you can have 2
simultaneous rdp connections.
On a 2008 server *with* the TS role installed, you can have 1
administrative rdp connection without licensing requiremants, by
using the /admin switch.

Documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=947723

So it's not the default behaviuour that you can only establish 1
connection. Have you checiked the rdp-tcp properties?
What error message do you get when you tried to make a second
connection?

I just brought up my first Windows Server 2008. I enabled Remote
Desktop and it works fine. But I noticed that it allows only one
logon. Can I get the same TS functionality in 2008 that I had in
2003 for administrative logons? I think it was two remote and
one at the console. I have not yet enabled the 2008 TS service.
If I do, will it allow the two remote admin connections without
TSCALs? I don't want to enable it, only to be told 90 days
later that I need to buy TSCALs.

Thanks,

-Frank
