Re: When using Remote Desktop on a WinXP remote PC, the Screen Sav

Hi Craig,

I am quite sure the cause of the problem is some settings that i
"tweaked". I just don't know which settings to look for =(

I came to this conclusion because my office computer and spare home
computer have not been "tweaked" by me, and after connecting to them
using remote desktop, their monitors will go into screen saver mode
(default windows xp logo screen saver, not the screen saver that i had
set), and eventually the monitors will go into standby mode.

Was hoping someone might know. My last resort will be to reinstall
windows xp, but I haven't found the time to do this yet.

I am having this same Exact problem. I even set my seconds really low, locked
my computer and the screen saver came up right away I wasnt thinking about
the remote desktop setting. I am curious to if you have found an answer yet
cause I remote my home computer from work all the time and everytime I come
home my monitor is sitting there BRIGHT as can be.

hi Noel,

really odd tingy. thought the monitor isn't going into sleep at all when the
logon screen is displayed. in other words: a single rdp connect kills the
powersaving behaviour of the box. hmmm....

i have no idea, i would export the Desktop and PowerCfg keys from the both
boxes and compare them. if no differences, they should behave exactly the
same for my understanding... but you wrote that you did copy the settings
over and haven't had any luck by that :( btw, the "PowerCfg" key contains
the value "CurrentPowerPolicy", that's an index to the profile to use under
"PowerCfg/PowerPolicies", does it differ?

since the HKCU hive does contain also the Desktop and PowerCfg keys, could
it be that the system loads your config when you login but doesn't revert to
the system config when you logoff?

Hi Jolt,

Thanks for the tip. I've checked out that registry section and found a
promising bit about PowerCfg and PowerPolicies ... tried copying my
profile's powerpolicies and globalpower policy into the default
profile but no luck ...

FYI: I dont really want the screen saver to start on the remote PC's
monitor. I just want the remote PC's monitor to go into standby.

Let me try to explain my problem in more detail:

My home computer monitors will go into standby after 30 minutes.

When I use remote desktop to connect to my home computer, the monitors
come out of standby mode and show the following login prompt:
"This computer is in use and has been locked.

Only xxx\yyy or an administrator can unlock this computer.

Username
Password"

The monitors never go into standby mode again, even after i disconnect
from my home computer. =(

My office computer doesn't have the same problem. When i remote
desktop to my office computer, the monitor eventually goes into
standby mode.

So i have been cracking my head and still haven't found any solution.

I know i could turn off both monitors but one of the monitors has a
faulty power box and if i keep turning it on and off at the switch,
its gonna cost me a bundle to replace it again. (Yes, i have replaced
it once already). Besides, its not getting to the root cause of the
problem =D

Thanks again for your help so far.

put the screensaver image name in "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control
Panel\Desktop\SCRNSAVE.EXE" and adjust the timeout values. the boot/logon
screen uses the default user profile mounted under this hive. also you can
change background color/image, mouse shadow and such there...

Happy New Year everyone!

When i use Remote Desktop to connect to my home computer, my home
computer's monitor will always show the windows login box and the
screen saver never starts up. Even worse, the monitor does not go into
standby mode.

Even after i disconnect from my Remote Desktop session, the monitor
will continue to show the login box and never go into screen saver/
standby mode.

I know this works on other computers so it seems to be an issue with
my computer settings but I do not know where to check.

I have made sure that the screen saver time out is 5 minutes and the
monitor goes into standby after 30 minutes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
