Re: Memory problems with Terminal Server 2003

I have this exact same problem. Outlook is killing me. It used to utilize
around 80mb and now it is up to 150mb per user. Whether it is shared or not
is of course a different issue...I would really like to know how to fix
this...

In reference to this statment:

When looking at task manager it is helpful to add the VM
Size column as well. As a general rule, on a dedicated TS
try to keep your PF Usage (Commit Charge) number
below the total amount of physical RAM.

Is there a particular reason for this? Mine is double...I always heard that
a page file should be 1-2 times that of memory.

Hi Gertjan,

Yes, it is normal for Internet Explorer and Outlook to use
large amounts of memory. How much memory they use
depends on many factors, for example, in IE7 how many
tabs each user opens, use of flash on each web page, use
of javascript on each page, etc.

Your server is currently overloaded. If CPU and disk IO
are not bottlenecks you could consider adding more RAM
and switching to a 64-bit version of windows or adding
more RAM and upgrading to 2003 Enterprise and staying
with 32-bit (I am assuming you are using a 32-bit version
of 2003 now).

When looking at task manager it is helpful to add the VM
Size column as well. As a general rule, on a dedicated TS
try to keep your PF Usage (Commit Charge) number
below the total amount of physical RAM.

Thanks.

We've a Windows 2003 Terminal server box supporting approx. 20 users.
This users uses commonly Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Internet

Server specs: 2x Dualcore Xeon processor, 4 GB RAM. Windows 2003
Dutch, Microsoft Office 2003 Dutch. Internet explorer 7; All
microsoft updates installed with microsoft update.

The problem is some programs are stopped because of a memory problem
at the server. In the task manager i see most of the outlook.exe and
iexplore.exe processes are comsuming a lot of memory (more than
120.000 kb per process). The PF-Usage in the taskmanager is 6,5 GB

When I monitor the memory usage on the server I see the following
values: % pagefile in use: 86%
Memory, Pages Output/sec : commonly 0 but one time in two minutes
very high, for example 12000.

Is it a normal behavior the outlook and iexplore processes are
consuming a lot of memory?

Gertjan
