Ahhh I get ya, so even if there are 0 per User licences there, clients will
still connect OK, and I can be safe in the knowledge that the customer owns
enough licences to satisfy the BSA..!

Did you change the server itself to per user licensing yet in TS Config?.
is it necessary? No it's not. It's more of a comfort thing if the BSA ever
comes in and investigates you've got your ducks in a row.

Should this really be necessary? The license on the Open agreement are Per
User which is correct?

No, if you have an Open license, it asks you how many licenses you
have bought, and you can type in any number. Seems the mistake was
made there.
If you change the licensing mode of the TS, your Per Device
licenses become useless. You should call the Clearinghouse and ask
them for help to change your licenses into Per User licenses

Thanks Jeff.
I hate to be pedantic, but the crux of my query is excatly how
did the server end up having 9 licences when their Open licence
only contains 6...?
In my experience of setting up TS, when I give the activation
wizard my agreement number, it just pulls down exactly the
licences purchased... How can User CALs be installed as Device
CALs???
And what will happen to those Device CALs when I switch the
licensing mode to Per User in TSCC?

Look in TS Configuration admin tool.
How did it happen? Someone screwed up. You manually set what
type of license the TS will use. The license server does not
set it for you.

Help!
I have recently taken over support of a client with the
following scenario:
1 x SBS2003 box running PDC, Exchange & SQL
1 x Server 2003 Std box running Terminal Services to 6 users
The customer has an open licence for all the software
including 6 USER TS CALs
On replacing a Thin Client, I am informed that I cannot
connect to RDP as there are no licences available. Odd I
thought...
Looking at TS Licencing, it is set to "Per Device" and has 2
sets of licenses installed: 4 x TS Device CALS, 5 x TS Device
CALs, all of which are
allocated to a mixture of new and old hardware.
My questions are:
1, How can I change the system to Per User and ensure that
the 6 User CALS are installed into the Licencing server?
2, How the heck did this happen in the first place?!
Thanks in advance (sorry for the long post but thought it
best to give as much info as possible!)
Gareth
