Have you tried using performance monitor to shed light on which processes are
eating up your resources?

Windows 2003 member server with Citrix PS4. The only clue is event 3019
MrxSmb appearing about once a minute throughout the day.

KB article suggests that it is benign although I've seen one other user
connect it with an unexpected server shutdown.

AV is Sophos.
