Re: T.S User Profiles

Dear Vera,

We tried to create the folder manually from users session, however no
success. Unless the folder is created by the system it doesn’t work.

Well thank you for your time; if you have any other ideas please let me know.

The article applies to Windows 2003 as well, the "Applies to" list
just hasn't been updated.

I don't know if this solves it, but have you tried to create the
windows directory manually for one of these accounts? Make sure
that it is created by the user who owns the home / profile
directory, to ensure that ownership and permissions are correct.

I'd also compare the values of the environment variable %windir%
between 2 accounts, from inside a TS session.

If the above solves the problem, you can easily create the windows
subdirectory for every user in a logon script. Something like (look
out for line wraps):

if not exist %homedrive%%homepath%\windows mkdir %homedrive%%
homepath%\windows

Dear Vera,

I read the KB article that you posted, I understand now the
implication for deferent scenarios however, my problem still
stays. The WINDOWS directory is still an issue to me. I also
noticed in the article that the article applies to Windows 2000
family not to Windows 2003 are there any exceptions for Win
2003?

Any other ideas regarding my WINDOWS directory problem???

In advance thank you.

But if you don't specify a Home directory at all, the system
automatically uses the same path as the profile path.

Documented here:

246132 - User Profile and Home Directory Behavior with Terminal
Services
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=246132

So the path
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\
is used for both the profile and the home directory.
You can verify this by checking the value of the environment
variables %userprofile% and %homedrive%%homepath%
(in a command window, type "set | more" without the quotes).

And the directory C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\windows
is located in the home directory (although in your setup this
also happens to be the profile).

The purpose of the %homedrive%%homepath%\windows directory is
explained in the KB article that I referenced and quoted.

I can imagine that the problem with older accounts which don't
have a \windows subfolder in their home directory has to do
with when the home directories were created (i.e. before the
users got a TS profile).

Hello Vera and Samim,

No, the home directory is not configured at all. Only the
"Terminal Service Profile" tab under user properties is
configured to point to a shared directory, and a logon script
under Profile tab, all others are left default. With this
configuration a local profile gets created on a Terminal
server and a T.S profile under the shared directory, which is
created as soon as the user logs off.

Samim,

The path to the terminal services profile is the following:
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\WINDOWS
I have noticed that the folder gets created for all new user
accounts that I create, but some of my existing users are not
generating this folder.

Can you tell what purpose this folder serves for? I
couldn’t find any info on TechNet only for the others.

Thank you all

No, not in the profile folder, but in the Home directory.

Unfortunately, many user accounts are configured in such a
way that the profile folder and the home directory are
identical.

From
186498 - Terminal Server application integration information
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=186498

"Execute mode is the default mode when a user logs on.
Terminal Server compares the INI files in %SystemRoot% to
the INI files in the user's home Windows directory."

"If the "Do not substitute user Windows directory" bit is
set, it retains the SystemRoot directory for
GetWindowsDirectory API calls. If this bit is not set, the
default action is to replace all of the paths to the Windows
directory with the path to the user's Windows directory."

Typically there is no "Windows" folder under the user's
profile folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<username>).
Where exactly are expecting this folder to show up? What
would be a typical complete path?
