Re: Internet Access at the Same Time as Remote Desktop Connection

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

I see. So you need VPN in order to connect to the TS server, but once you VPN, you loose connection to the internet, which your other applications need. There should not be anything special about the fact that you are doing RDP over VPN. In other words, once you start VPN, your app would stop working even if you never start the RDP session.

If TS is the only reason you use VPN, and your clients can upgrade to RDP client 6.0, then you can give TS Gateway a try. TS Gateway allows TS clients on the Internet connect to Longhorn or Windows Server 2003 Terminal Servers (or Vista & XP Sp2 desktops) without requiring a VPN. You can download the Beta3 of Longhorn Server, install it on an edge server and give it a spin. Take a look here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/terminal-services/default.mspx

If you must use VPN, it is possible to configure your VPN host so that it would allow outbound connections through it to the Internet. I would suggest http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/vpn/default.mspx. There you can also find a link to the VPN/remote access teams blog and the newsgroup. I am sure someone there would be able to help you set that up.

Samim, I apologise for not being explicit enough in my original post.

The remote PC uses VPN to connect to the corporate Lan. Then the user can
open a remote Desktop connection to the terminal server and access the
applications required e.g. Word , Outlook etc.

With this setup, the 'local' shipping application cannot get to the
internet. I have to obtain the error information. ( "Internet Explorer cannot
display the web page")

Anyway, this is a problem that occurs on any PC with a Remote Desktop
connection to the terminal server.

The sequence is like this........

If I make a VPN connection to the corporate lan, I am unable to use the PC
to access the Internet. This is because the VPN connection alters the routing
table information.
However, if I change the TCP/IP properties for the VPN connection, for the
default gateway ( advanced) I can.

However, this will not allow me to make the Remote connection to the
terminal server.

So you understand the dilemna. I can have one or the other, but not both.

So how can I configure the PC to allow local internet access and remote
desktop via VPN?

Thanks

It is possible that the combined bandwidth of your Shipping application and
the RDP session gets too large and causes the Shipping application to be
starved of network bandwidth. Or maybe the Shipping application is changing
network settings in a way that interferes with RDP.

Does the Shipping application open a special connection, e.g. a VPN
connection to a particular target? While using the Shipping application do
you have network connectivity in other applications?
