There is a cost in the 32->64 bit translation, but it is so low as to be meaningless for most purposes. As I mentioned in my other response, the critical benefit from 64 bit for TS is not the ability to use more than 4 GB of RAM natively (which is nice, but not a huge deal). 32 bit Windows divides the virtual memory space into 2 GB chunks. 2 GB for the application (and each app gets its own space) and 2 GB for the kernel. The 2 GB for the kernel applies across *all* apps. Every logon to a machine consumes more of the kernel memory, and when the kernel memory is used up, you're done. In 64 bit windows, the address space is so large that the kernel memory limit doesn't matter; you can add more RAM to a memory constrained machine and it will always help (assuming memory is the problem, not CPU overload or the like).

how does the 64bit handle 32bit deployed applications. I heard that it handles just as well as 32bit os and allows true scaling of memory past the 32bit application limit of 4gb. Is that correct ?

is that you get (good) drivers for the machine from the vendor. I
would have a look at HP's site and check out if the 64 Bit drivers are
up to date. Next think of every piece of software you plan to use that
uses a (filtering) driver - antivirus comes to mind, but also many
other products. Finally, you need more RAM on x64. Consider buying 8
GB where 4 GB would suffice with a 32 Bit OS.
I hope this helps.

I am looking into implementing a 64-bit Terminal server, but am unsure of
what Hardware I need for this server to run. I am looking at buying an HP
DL300 Series Server with a 64-bit operating system, and having 40-60 users
running applications off of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
