Re: Drawbacks of same user name logging in multiple times?

To answer both Cary and Vera, they have a TS license for each user, so that
is not the issue.

The reason is that they have multiple eyecare stores and they currently log
in with individual user's first initial and last name, using a password
unique to each individual. Apparently, the problem is that one tech will
come in early and start all the TS sessions in each of the exam rooms so
that the doctors can be ready to go. That does not work for them, since a
tech does not have other users' passwords. They are thinking that they could
change the user names to be the name of each workstation preceded by the
store number, such as "024-Exam01" and a common or similar password. I think
that will be much better than one single login per store.

Thank you for your help!

Vera,

My *guess* would be that they are thinking that they can save the $ by not
buying the license for each TS user. In my experience it almost always
boils down to this...

The finance people do not want to pay so the tech people have to come up
with a solution...

I sure hope that I am wrong.

Yes, it will.
With each new user who logs on, the default printer for all of the
other instances of that same user account will switch to the
default printer on the client which logged in last.

And then you still have the profile corruption problem.
I would go to any length to avoid this setup.

Just curious, but what is the perceived advantage of a shared user
account?

Jeff,

Thank you for that information. This particular client has a
corporate office with nine remote locations. Each of those
locations has between two and fifteen identical XP Pro
workstations. What they are thinking of doing is have each
location log in with a single user related to the store number.
All locations have various HP printers, one type per location,
and they are all mapped to use the HP LaserJet 4000 driver that
is built into Windows Server 2003.

In this type of setup, would the printer issue you mentioned be
a potential problem?

I've seen issues where the printers stop working for the users
previously logged in. As well, since there is only one profile
for all users of the same account, settings can be changed on
other users (for example, someone sets an app setting to
something that works for them, it then also changes it for
every other user). As well, profiles become corrupted and need
to be recreated. That's a start.....

Hello!

I have been Googling trying to find out any drawbacks to
having a TS setup in which one user name is used to log into
the TS many times. This TS is used to allow access to one
application that uses a SQL database. Users will not be
accessing any other applications on the TS.

I found a few posts where people said it is not a good idea,
or "bad things happen," but nothing about the specific
problems that may be encountered.

What are the reasons for not having one name log into the TS
multiple times?

Thank you for your time!
