Re: Load Balance TS Sessions

We had a similar symptom with difficulty connecting from sites that were ADSL
into our WAN and we were using IPSEC security layer for that section. This
led to packet fragmentation which NLB cannot handle. We changed the remote
router settings to encrypt before fragmenting so the router at the other end
has to reassemble the packets before it can remove the encryption then the
original packet gets delivered to the cluster. Everything works fine now

If you need a good Terminal Server Load Balancer, but can't afford Citrix.
Presentation Server, I'd suggest that you look at Provision Management
Framework Enterprise(PMFE), which is a functional equivalent to Citrix
Presentation Server, or 2X LoadBalancer which is just an RDP or ICA Load
Balancer. Both are very inexpensive, where 2X Load Balancer is licensed by
the number of servers that are being load balanced and PMFE is licensed per
concurrent user, at $99 per user.
I'd be happy to put you in touch or give you a demo of either product.

A little bit of both... and no, I am not using Session Directory as our
servers are only Standard Edition.
The user clicks on the link on their desktop and sometimes it goes through
on the first try and other times it takes several attempts. I have noticed
that each time the session connects, it connects to the same server and I
have lowered its priority and I have altered the balance of the other server
to be higher just to get more traffic going that way.

Is the problem that clients cannot connect or that they always connect up to
the same terminal server irrespective of the load?
Are you using Session Directory to manage the two terminal servers?

I have 3 remote locations hosting about 20 thin clients. These users are
connecting back to the central office and are manually selecting between
two
servers which host their email, MS Office and a couple home grown apps. I
am
trying to balance the incoming traffic using NLB or even a 3rd party
solution
(Citrix is out due to cost).
Right now, through testing, if a user selects the virtual TS icon they
sometimes get an error stating the computer cannot connect to the remote
location. If they try two, three up to five tries the session connects. I
am
using multicast and affinity is set to none (I don't care what server they
hit). I have even tried to alter the balance from 50/50 to 30/70 so I can
get
a better balance of connections, but the testing always goes to the same
server. I have even tried altering the priority.
Any ideas? They are W2k3 and they are not DCs
Thanks,
