Re: Installing software in TS session

The software vendor insists that it must be installed in each users profile

I've seen this before. I think the vendor isn't doing a good job of
explaining the job. (or the poster asking for help).

http://www.harms-software.com/support/knowledge/index.asp

see the whitepaper on remote desktop and terminal services.

This shows how they do it. This product uses a foxpro database. I
think what makes a difference on TS regarding the client installs is
what database the application uses.

If what your vendor is saying matches what this whitepaper is showing
you, they are correct.

What application is this? what database? Have you read the
documentation? Does the vendor mean you have to do the CLIENT install
to each user profile?

What do you mean by unique access? How were you planning on installing
the software for each user to have their own executable? Does the
vendor support terminal services?

Vera,
you say not to do this for every user however the software we are going
to be using primarily requires each user to have a unique access to the exe
or it corrupts. Can you explain your statewment further so I may understand
what may happen?

Thanks for the patience :-)

Don't do this for every user!

When you want to install an application on a TS for multiple users,
you do so as the Administrator.
By putting the server into "install mode", you actually "tell" the
server that it must monitor all changes to the registry and file
system that are made by the installation, and to give each user a
private copy of these registry and ini-file changes, as soon as they
logon to the TS.

OK, I am connected to my terminal server and the connections
seem to be solid. All of my updates are done on both the
server and client machine. Server is running Win2k3 server
enterprise. The client machine is running win xp pro.

I need to install a proprietary software to each terminal
services profile individually. The problem is that when I log
into the profile and then execute the installer, windows gives
me "Add or Remove programs has been restricted. Please check
with your administrator."

I have tried changing the permission level in the terminal
services configuration\connection and it still errors out. I
am fairly new to TS and am sure that this is an easy fix but I
am stumped.

HELP :-)
Jeff

installing software on terminal server is NOT same as other
windows platforms. go to a command line and type this before
installing software: change user /install

then install the software you need to install

then type this when you're done installing software (at command
line)

change user /execute

Good luck,

Oskar
