The software vendor insists that it must be installed in each
users profile within terminal services. Yes, they do support
TS.
That's a contradiction in terms, and taken literally, completely
unreasonable and ridiculous.
What exactly does the vendor mean, that you install the complete
application over and over again, in different program folders, for
each user?
Consider this: many companies have a couple of load-balanced
Terminal Servers, to carry the total user load. Personally, I
manage a farm of 15 load-balanced servers, with a total number of
1500 users (not simultaneously, but that's my user base).
Each of these users can connect to any of these 15 servers.
So following your vendors advice, I would have to install the
application 1500 times on 15 servers.
Sounds to me that the vendor doesn't have a clue about TS. I'm
usually hesitant to express myself so harsh, but this really upsets
me ;-)

What do you mean by unique access? How were you planning on
installing the software for each user to have their own
executable? Does the vendor support terminal services?

Vera,
you say not to do this for every user however the software
we are going
to be using primarily requires each user to have a unique
access to the exe or it corrupts. Can you explain your
statewment further so I may understand what may happen?
Thanks for the patience :-)

Don't do this for every user!
When you want to install an application on a TS for multiple
users, you do so as the Administrator.
By putting the server into "install mode", you actually
"tell" the server that it must monitor all changes to the
registry and file system that are made by the installation,
and to give each user a private copy of these registry and
ini-file changes, as soon as they logon to the TS.

OK, I am connected to my terminal server and theinstalling software on terminal server is NOT same as other
connections seem to be solid. All of my updates are done
on both the server and client machine. Server is running
Win2k3 server enterprise. The client machine is running
win xp pro.
I need to install a proprietary software to each terminal
services profile individually. The problem is that when I
log into the profile and then execute the installer,
windows gives me "Add or Remove programs has been
restricted. Please check with your administrator."
I have tried changing the permission level in the terminal
services configuration\connection and it still errors out.
I am fairly new to TS and am sure that this is an easy
fix but I am stumped.
HELP :-)
Jeff
windows platforms. go to a command line and type this
before installing software: change user /install
then install the software you need to install
then type this when you're done installing software (at
command line)
change user /execute
Good luck,
Oskar
