Loopback processing of a GPO applied to a TS means that not only
the computer settings, but also the user settings in the TS policy
are applied to all users connecting to the TS, instead of the user
settings in the GPO which applies to the user account (which would
be the normal behaviour of policies).
So you can lock down the TS as much as you want without
simultaneously locking down the users' workstations.
About speeding up your logons:
you will always see a time difference when you compare local
profiles with roaming profiles. So how long is "it takes a little
while"?
The only thing you can do (when there are no unload errors in the
EventLog) is make the profile as small as possible. Redirect as
much as possible (My Documents, Application Data). Make sure that
the users have a home directory which is separate from their
profile.
Have a look at the Internet Explorer settings as well. Make sure
that Temporary Internet files are deleted each time IE closes, and
limit the amount of disk space for them. By default, they are
already excluded from roaming with the profile.
Yes, it's a good idea to redirect all users to a custom desktop,
which they don't have write access to. Educate your users that user
documents always must be saved in their home directory.

Hello all:.
At my company we have 2 individual win 2k term servers.
I want to seup a new 2003 term farm but with ts roaming
profiles. This farm would replace the 2 win 2k servers..
Those 2 servers were intended for a handfull of users and
frankly more of our workers are enjoying working remotly at
their homes or on the road.
The servers are used for mainly office 2003 and a very small non
resource demading visual fox pro program..
In the past the previous director recalled stories about the
hell he had when one of the servers hd died. He had no backup
and the profiles were localâ?¦
Plus the remote users had a rdp file where some clients were
pointed to one server and the rest to anotherâ?¦
Yikes.. this is another reason why I want to attempt the term
svr farm with NLB.. Budget is a problem but I got enough for 2
powerfull servers but nothing else as stated by the ownerâ?¦
I intend to setup a separate OU and place the term servers
there. then I can apply any GPs.
I am testing a simple barebone win 2k3 server with nothing else
on it just to adapt myself with ts roaming profilesâ?¦
I used the Gp option for ts roaming profile shared paths and all
works fineâ?¦
I am also looking at â??loopback processing" as shown on Vera
Noestâ??s website â??ts_policiesâ?? still clouded about what
this policy does if anyone can elaborate I will be very
thankfullâ?¦
However logon for a user set for ts roaming takes a little while
and so does logoffâ?¦ all is well in the event viewer though...
Again this server is just a test machine it has an ata ide
mirror hard drive with a 2Ghz processor and 2GB ramâ?¦
A user without roaming profile takes a few seconds to login..
What can I do to control the file sycing when it comes to ts
roaming profilesâ?¦ I am thinking about using the GP â??Exclude
directories in roaming profileâ??
All our users have their my docs redirectedâ?¦ I am thinking of
finding some way of blocking the users from saving anything on
their desktop folder it selfâ?¦thus less stuf to save upon log
off and less to load upon next logon..
Any ideas.. the help speed up this processâ?¦???
