Re: Roaming Profiles

When you are deploying applications with Terminal Services / Citrix, the user profile is located on the server where the application is running. The thin client only has the RDP/ICA client that you are using to connect to the Terminal Server. As far as managing user profiles on the server:

Roaming User Profiles, or RUP as I call it, is the same technology regardless of where it is configured. RUP works by downloading the contents of the user profile at logon and uploading it back to the server at logoff. The Terminal Server Proflile GP is simply a way to configure RUP with a machine GP. This tends to be much easier to maintain than configuring a profile location for each AD domain user account.

See "gpedit.msc": Computer Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Terminal Services --> "Set path for TS Roaming Profiles"

One of the disadvantages of RUP is that the entire profile must be downloaded before the user can log on. If you are looking for something that will keep the data on the server and not block logon, you should investigate Folder Redirection. FR is configured through a user GP. You can apply user GP's to a machine by enabling what is called "loopback policy processing".

FR; however, can only redirect 4 special shell folders in XP/WS03. It will be significantly enhanced in Vista/LHS. Still, the user registry hive, HKCU, can only be centralized with the RUP technology. There are some interesting third party utilities worth investigating as well. Try searching for "flex profiles".

See "gpedit.msc": User Configuration --> Windows Settings --> Folder Redirection

We have recently started using citrix and want to activate roaming
profiles. We have thin clients and would like to use them. i was
setting up the roaming profiles though AD and putting a destination
target for each user. this worked fine but would only save information
to the designated location after a logoff. I have been told that i
need to set it up through Terminal Services to allow realtime saving.
so that the thin client is strictly acting as a monitor. I still want
to be able to be able to log onto onto one location save information on
the desktop/my documents etc, map drives then logoff, log onto a new
thin client and all the files and mapped drives appear there as if on
the previous machine. Any help would be great. Thank you in advance.
