I have to disagree with most of the posts here, we are running ESX
3.2.0 on a DL585, quad 64bit dual core procs, and 64gb of memory and we
have had no trouble with Citrix in this environment. We currently have
16 of our 35 Citrix servers split up and running between 2 of our ESX
doing anything from publishing desktops for ~1000 users to published
applications for all of our users. We have noticed that there is a line
where the performance starts to drop off, when we get ~30 concurrent
users on one server they will start to fall off a little. As far as the
reliability (VMWare server dies and all servers die) that should be
addresses shortly by VMWare with the shared resources. All you will
need to circumvent that liability is a small SAN that is hooked up to
your ESX servers.
We are patiently awaiting the functionality of 64 bit host OS's in
VMWare, I am really excited to see what kind of performance gain that
will give us running a 64 bit hosts.
I am also curious to know what kind of hardware and applications the
folks are using here that have had all the problems with it. Our
infrastructure team has been to several different users groups for both
Citrix and VMWare and heard people complain about performance and after
you talk to them about hardware you can see why they are having
problems. It has been my experience that people are trying this with
32bit systems non dual core systems with small amounts of memory and
that just won't cut it.
